  • Focuses on providing insurance for mobile homes, hard to insure homes, motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and collector cars.

  • Dairyland Insurance Company is considered to be a non-standard auto insurer and standard motorcycle insurer. This is due to the fact that they will insure drivers other insurance companies have deemed too risky. These high-risk drivers include those with DUI records, multiple traffic violations, multiple accidents, or even youthful drivers.
  • Deals with high risk vehicles as well as high risk drivers.
  • Bi-lingual and accepts foreign licenses.
  • Dairyland is a mutual insurance company that was founded in 1904 and is part of the Sentry Insurance Group, WI.

  • In 1889, the Donegal Insurance Group began as Donegal and Conoy Mutual Fire Insurance Company when a small group of farmers wanted to provide mutual protection for their farms and property.
  • The name was changed to Donegal Insurance Group and through the years the company acquired Delaware Atlantic Insurance Co., Pioneer Insurance Co., Southern Heritage Insurance Co., Le Mars Insurance Co., Reading Mutual Insurance Co., Southern Mutual, and Michigan Insurance Co.
  • In 1986 Donegal completed its initial public offering of common stock and is listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange.

  • Encompass name introduced in 1999-2000 when Allstate purchased personal lines insurance from CNA and is still owned by Allstate.
  • Encompass is licensed for home, auto and home based businesses in 42 states.

Foremost Insurance Group


  • Foremost Insurance Group was started in 1952 to provide insurance for mobile homes and in the 1960s worked with state legislators to create mandatory tie-down laws.
  • March 2000 was acquired by the Farmers Insurance Group.
  • Licensed in all 50 states and Washington D.C.
  • Insurance products include home, auto, mobile home, motorcycle, fifth-wheel, travel trailer,

luxury motor coach, vacant home, landlord and rental home, seasonal home, off-road vehicles, scooter, golf carts, snowmobiles, various boat insurances as well as collectible vehicles plus flood insurance.

  • Grange was founded in 1935 providing auto insurance to rural drivers. Now licensed in 13 states through the independent agent system.
  • Grange Insurance is a division of the Grange Mutual Casualty Group providing all aspects of auto, home, and business insurance along with personal umbrella as well as identity theft coverage.

The Hartford

The Hartford

  • Established in 1810 as The Hartford Fire Insurance Company.
  • 1835 The Hartford’s president used personal wealth to cover claims after a huge fire destroys New York’s financial district by braving a blizzard in a horse drawn sleigh to pay the claims.
  • 1859 Robert E. Lee purchased an insurance policy to cover his family home known as “Arlington” which is now part of Arlington National Cemetery.
  • 1861 Abraham Lincoln purchased a fire policy on his home and property in Springfield, IL.
  • 1863 during the Civil War an agent was cut off from The Hartford, buried his clients’ proof of loss following the Charleston, SC fire. After the war he dug up the claims, sent them to The Hartford and all claims were paid in full.
  • 1871 The Hartford paid claims of almost $2 million for the Great Chicago Fire.
  • 1920 “Babe Ruth” purchased a sickness policy to protect his earnings.
  •  1931 The Hartford carried the bonds for the Hoover Dam.
  • 1937 The Hartford bonded the construction of The Golden Gate Bridge.
  • 1945 provided liability insurance for the first meeting of the United Nations.
  • 1970 was acquired by ITT Corporation for $1.4 billion, the largest corporation in American history; combined company is renamed ITT-Hartford Group, Inc.
  • 1995 The Hartford becomes an independent entity trading on the New York Stock Exchange as HIG.

  • Kemper Corporation formerly Unitrin, Inc. incorporated as a diversified insurance holding company.

  • MAPFRE USA originated in 1972 as The Commerce Group, Inc. (CGI), then in 2008 CGI was acquired by MAPFRE S.A., Madrid, Spain.
  • MAPFRE provides property and casualty insurance in 16 states including auto, homeowners, commercial auto, and commercial property insurance.
  • Markets through AAA Clubs and was only available through AAA until about 2008 when they opened their products up to independent agencies.

  • 1996 Travelers Indemnity Co. and the Aetna Casualty and Surety Co. merge.
  • 2004 Travelers and The St. Paul merge to form the St. Paul Travelers Companies, Inc.
  • 2007 changes its name to The Travelers Companies, Inc. and re-acquires the red umbrella as its symbol.
  • 2009 Dow Jones adds The Travelers Companies as the only insurance company on the Industrial Average.
